Kayla M. Herig: Finding the Way
“The true gift of the wayfinder’s journey is not arrival at a destination; it is who we become along the way as we fulfill our potential.” - Dr. Chellie Spiller, Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr, & John Panoho
The practice of wayfinding originated as the Polynesian art of navigating the open oceans without the use of technology. Wayfinders use knowledge and observations about the oceans and celestial bodies to find their way. In order to be successful in this art, one must be in touch with the flow of information, knowing simultaneously where you are, where you are going, how to get there, and how to return home. The emphasis on observation makes this subtle work. One must be quiet on the inside in order to be in tune with what is occurring on the outside. Perhaps this is why wayfinders are regarded with such admiration and respect in the Polynesian culture.
The term wayfinding has evolved to have other meanings in society as well. On a physical level, wayfinding can refer to the creation of signage that enables people to find a destination, anything from street signs to instructions on how to enter a building. Some people refer to wayfinders as individuals who have the ability to navigate through chaos while keeping a cool head and a peaceful disposition. Perhaps they even lead others through the chaos to find stability, physical or emotional.

We are so lucky, here at Rock 101, to have our very own wayfinder. She has been with the company from the very beginning; in fact, we might argue that she has been with the company since before its inception. She is very much part of the Rock 101 Prequel. She knew Kevin Herig before he knew how to play the guitar; she has baked too many pizzas to remember for the early Summer Sessions; she is responsible for keeping Rock 101 on track and aligned with its values over the years. She is, of course, Kayla Martinez Herig.
Kayla has always been intrigued by the power of fonts and design. As a child, she remembers playing around with different handwriting styles and observing how they could change the feel of the information written. She noticed the signage whenever she visited places, observing whether they were accurate, helpful, and provided the right feel. She took this fascination with her into her education and then her professional life as a graphic designer. She admits that she is obsessed with fonts. A font is a very subtle thing, capable of changing the perception of information as well as unconsciously affecting the opinions of those who read it.
From its beginning, Kayla has felt inspired by the effect of Rock 101. She sees this when she watches students of all kinds being their authentic, goofy selves. She feels uplifted when she watches female students transform into the empowered rock stars that were always hiding inside. Her ultimate tearjerker moment is when she watches the nerves and unsteadiness of students immediately prior to performing and then sees their joy and confidence as they walk off the stage. Rock 101 has the power to expand and to transform.
Kayla has helped with Rock 101 since its start in 2011. Due to a full time job, she volunteered her time at first, officially joining the staff in 2016. When she thinks about Rock 101 through the years, she can observe how it has shifted while also remaining the same. Though locations and logistics may change, she observes that the mission has stayed true. From its beginning, Rock 101 has aimed to empower youth through music. The values have always included creating: a community where everyone belongs, a safe space for individuals to be themselves, and a fun environment where silliness is equivalent to authenticity.
This is where her wayfinding powers come into play. Kayla works diligently behind the scenes to ensure that every flyer, picture, and graphic that pertains to Rock 101 encompasses the qualities that have been cultivated through the years. Ever present in the background, you will find Kayla constantly watching and observing. As any wayfinder knows, it is necessary to discern both the details of what is happening as well as the big picture in order to continue towards a destination. New Zealanders Chellie Spiller, Hoturoa Barcley-Kerr, and John Ponoho describe it thusly: “Wayfinding requires that we become ‘explorers of our world’ seeking to discover and shine light upon that which is not seen.”
Whether creating new marketing materials, selling merch at events, or providing feedback about processes, Kayla’s impact can be felt throughout Rock 101. Did you sign up for an activity after being attracted to a poster on the wall? Love the logo being sold on the new hoodies? Enjoying Dress Up day on Summer Sessions Wednesdays? That’s Kayla. She uses her observational and creative skills to navigate potential chaos and keep us pointed towards our true north. This is subtle and intentional work that is incredibly fulfilling for her. While she keeps Rock 101 pointed in the right direction, the work itself has the same effect on her.
See, feel, and adjust as needed. Kayla’s presence and her insights provide stability as Rock 101 explores, empowers, and expands. Would Rock 101 survive without Kayla? Sure. It’s possible. But we may find ourselves lost at sea.
